A PDF QR code is a link—not a PDF stored inside the image

This generator encodes the PDF's existing address. It does not host a document, change sharing permissions or turn a private file into a public one. A clean scan followed by “request access” is a permissions failure at the destination, not a broken QR image.

Public-document workflow with Google Drive

1. Use a document intended for public distribution. Open its sharing controls and select the appropriate audience and Viewer role. Your organisation may prevent public links.
2. Copy the shared link, then open it in a signed-out private browser. Confirm that a reader can view the correct document without requesting access.
3. Paste that tested link into the generator. Download SVG for a print layout or a suitably sized PNG for a digital document.
4. Print at the intended size and scan the exported artwork, not just the browser preview. Test both access and legibility on a phone.

Do not make contracts, payroll records or private customer files public to make a QR code convenient. A publicly shared document can also expose its owner's identity. See Google's current sharing instructions before changing access.

Update the document without replacing the printed code

For a restaurant menu or event handout, the most maintainable pattern is a stable page you control, such as your own /menu address, which links to the current PDF. Update the page when the document changes. If a replacement PDF receives a new storage URL, a code pointing directly at the old URL does not automatically follow it.

A static code can keep the same destination while the content at that destination changes. It cannot edit an embedded URL remotely. Confirm that the old public link still opens the intended document after every update; never assume that uploading a file with the same name preserves its address.

Diagnose the failure before reprinting

Keep a record of the destination, print size, phone tests and revision date using our QR acceptance log. The log is local; this website does not monitor your destination or count scans.

The QR points to a file; it does not contain the PDF

Host the document at a stable HTTPS address and encode that address. Anyone scanning must have permission to reach the host, and changes to sharing settings can make a previously working code inaccessible.

Open the link in a private mobile browser before printing. Confirm that the PDF loads without your account, is readable on a phone, and is not so large that it becomes impractical on cellular service.

Maintain the document behind a stable URL

When the PDF will be revised, keep the same public address and replace the hosted document according to your storage provider’s rules. Include a visible title, revision date, and fallback URL near the code.
